So, how do you define success? There are as many ways to talk about success as there are people who meet and exceed their goals. In other words, the definition of success that you end up with will begin with the person you ask. Every person you ask will likely give you a slightly different definition of success. Because of this, in the end you will end up with a myriad of definitions, each one as valid to the person who articulated it as the next.

So, how do you make sense out of all these competing versions and visions of success? It goes without saying that each person has to define what success is for them. There is no substitute for personal vision when it comes to overall happiness in life. Success, when you come right down to it, is simply a way for any one person to measure personal happiness. To paraphrase the song, if it makes you happy, then it can’t be that bad.

So, one way of defining success is personal happiness. The problem is that equating happiness with success doesn’t get us out of the woods. This happens because a large number of people don’t fully understand exactly what it is that makes them happy. You see while happiness is often thought of as a state of mind, it is actually a conscious choice.

You not only have to consciously decide to be happy, you also have to decide what things in life are important to your continued happiness. Once you’ve decided what things are important, then you have to work towards those goals that allow you to attain those things. So while happiness is, in some sense, a state of mind, it is also a continuing linear process. You could say that happiness is a full-time job.

When it comes to a successful business mindset understanding the process of happiness, and how it relates to success, is very important. In order to be successful, you need to clearly understand what success means to you. Then you need to work towards that success, however you have defined it. You need to establish concrete points along the way that will help you measure your progress as you work.

Finally, you need to know when you have reached the goal or goals you have set. Without this type of success roadmap, you run the risk of working very hard to achieve something that brings you no real happiness. When this happens, an individual is lost, in the most profound meaning of that word.
